By Our Correspondent: A woman was allegedly hacked to death by her husband following their divorce in Nagarpur upazila of Tangail. After allegedly killing his wife, the man reportedly stabbed himself in the neck and abdomen in an apparent suicide attempt. The victim’s mother was also seriously injured while trying to intervene.
The incident took place at around 8:00pm on Wednesday (September 23) in Bade Kakna village under Dhubaria Union of Nagarpur upazila.
The deceased was identified as Nilufa Akter Milu, 40. The accused husband, Hazrat Ali, is a resident of Dahar Pachuria village in the same upazila. The victim’s mother, Chenbanu, was seriously injured in the incident and is undergoing treatment.
According to local sources, Hazrat Ali and Nilufa had been married for around six years. They had reportedly been experiencing family disputes for a long time. After enduring the ongoing conflict, Nilufa divorced her husband about a week before the incident.
Locals said Hazrat Ali became angry after learning about the divorce. On Wednesday night, he allegedly went to his in-laws’ house carrying a sharp weapon. Upon seeing Nilufa, he allegedly attacked her repeatedly, leaving her critically injured. She died at the scene.
Hearing her daughter’s screams, Chenbanu rushed to save her. She was also allegedly attacked and seriously injured.
After attacking his wife and mother-in-law, Hazrat Ali allegedly stabbed himself in the abdomen and neck with the knife in an apparent suicide attempt. Local residents rescued Hazrat Ali and Chenbanu in critical condition and took them to Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Nagarpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahurul Islam confirmed the incident. He said police went to the scene after receiving the information, recovered Nilufa’s body and sent it for autopsy.
A murder case has been filed by the deceased’s father, the OC said. The accused husband is currently receiving treatment at a hospital under police guard.
